In a bold move amid escalating trade tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a potential 200% tariff on champagne and other alcoholic beverages from the European Union. This threat follows the EU's decision to impose tariffs on $28 billion worth of U.S. goods, including a 50% levy on whiskey, escalating the ongoing trade dispute between Washington and Brussels.
Trump's call for the EU to rescind its whiskey tariff comes as the U.S. also hones its focus on what it perceives as Europe's 'hostile' trade policies. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen defended the EU's stance, stating the bloc's need to safeguard consumers and businesses against U.S. trade measures.
The reciprocal tariff threats rattled financial markets, with early Thursday stock futures plummeting as the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures registered losses. The escalating conflict also mirrors the U.S.-China trade spat, which has seen an increase in tariffs on both sides, exacerbating fears of a potential economic slowdown.
