In central Amsterdam, a stabbing incident has left at least five individuals injured, police informed Euro News. Three of the victims, including two elderly individuals, were transported to the hospital by ambulance. The altercation occurred near Dam Square, a bustling area now cordoned off, disrupting tram services between Amsterdam Central and Dam Square. Dutch media confirmed that a suspect has been swiftly detained, though a motive for the assault remains unclear.
On February 17, in Austria, a disturbing knife attack unfolded in the center of Villach, where one person was fatally stabbed and five others injured. The New York Times reported that a Syrian national was arrested at the scene. Austrian officials disclosed that the suspect, who had been radicalized online, was influenced by the Islamic State group.
Authorities revealed that the 23-year-old suspect, granted asylum after arriving from Syria in 2020, seemingly chose his victims at random. The tragic incident, which took place around 4 PM, was halted by a courageous 42-year-old Syrian witness who intervened by ramming the attacker with his car, potentially preventing further harm. The prompt response by two officers enabled the immediate arrest of the suspect, as reported by state police director Michaela Kohlweiss.
