External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed the Rajya Sabha on Monday about the escalating conflict conditions in West Asia, following a series of US-Israeli strikes on Iran. These attacks have ignited a broader regional conflict. In a session marked by opposition sloganeering, Jaishankar highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring developments, with pertinent ministries coordinating responses.

This briefing follows the outbreak of war on February 28, triggered by US-Israeli strikes that targeted Iran, resulting in the death of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and key leaders. The situation has escalated, with new attacks over the weekend on oil and water infrastructure. Jaishankar said the government pre-emptively expressed concerns over regional volatility.

India had voiced its concerns on February 20, urging restraint and advocating for dialogue and diplomacy to ease tensions, Jaishankar reiterated. He confirmed India's official concern over the conflict on February 28, 2026, amidst mounting casualties and Iran's leadership collapse.

The Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Modi, is actively involved in crisis management, Jaishankar informed Parliament. The committee prioritizes Indians' safety in the region and travelers, with directives issued to ministers for appropriate actions.

Jaishankar noted the geopolitical climate's deterioration, pointing out the worsening situation affecting neighboring countries. Despite internal disruptions, he reaffirmed India's commitment to a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy as the optimal path to de-escalate tensions.
