PM Modi's Strategic European Sojourn: A New Era of Ties and Innovation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming six-day tour aims to strengthen India's relations with Northern Europe and the Gulf. Spanning five countries, the visit focuses on enhancing bilateral ties, exploring innovative collaborations, and addressing key geopolitical concerns, reinforcing India's global influence and strategic partnerships.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to embark on a significant six-day, five-nation voyage designed to reinforce India's influence across Northern Europe and the Gulf region, according to an announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday. The tour, commencing this Friday, will focus on strategic engagements in Sweden, the UAE, the Netherlands, Norway, and Italy.

MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George highlighted the mission's strategic importance, particularly emphasizing the Scandinavian segment. In Sweden, PM Modi will visit Gothenburg on May 17, marking his second visit since the 2018 India-Nordic Summit. This visit aims to deepen bilateral relations amid current geopolitical shifts, particularly in areas like green transition, AI, and defence.

The itinerary includes high-level economic engagements, such as the European Round Table for Industry with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The tour kicks off in the UAE, where discussions with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will center on energy cooperation and regional issues, alongside dialogues concerning the welfare of the substantial Indian community in the UAE.

In the Netherlands, PM Modi will meet with King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, and Prime Minister Rob Jetten to further enhance cooperation in defence, security, and green technologies. Norway will host the third India-Nordic Summit, providing a platform for strategic dialogues on technology, renewable energy, and the Arctic.

The tour will culminate in Italy, where discussions with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will focus on the joint strategic action plan for 2025-2029. Through this visit, India seeks to solidify its role as a global economic leader and foster extensive trade and investment partnerships, following the recent India-EU free trade agreement.
