Sabers' Okposo clears concussion, set to play against Leafs

Buffalo Sabres right wing Kyle Okposo cleared concussion protocol and is slated to play in Monday's road game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Okposo has been sidelined since being punched in the chin by New York Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo on Feb. 15. It was his third diagnosed concussion in three years.

The Sabres placed Okposo on injured reserve on Saturday and said he was out indefinitely. But Okposo took part in Monday's morning skate in Toronto and declared himself ready to go after a four-game absence.

"I think there's a psychological component too," Okposo told reporters. "You get hit and I obviously know my history better than anyone so there's definitely that component of 'Am I OK?' and then you start second-guessing. "You've just got to find a balance. You really just have to be in tune with your body and your mind and be really honest with yourself and how you feel and I feel great."

The 30-year-old Okposo's history with concussions includes a severe one late in the 2016-17 season that led to him being admitted to the Neuro Surgical ICU of Buffalo General Medical Center after he experienced sleeping issues and significant weight loss. Okposo's hockey future was unclear for part of the following offseason before he felt comfortable continuing his career.

Okposo has 10 goals and 12 assists (22 points) in 57 games this season. He is in the third season of a seven-year, $42 million deal.
