Jets acquire F Hayes from Rangers

The Winnipeg Jets acquired forward Kevin Hayes from the New York Rangers on Monday for forward Brendan Lemieux and a 2019 first-round draft pick. The Jets then closed out trade-deadline day with five more moves, bringing back forward Matt Hendricks from the Minnesota Wild for a seventh-round pick in 2020, landing forward Par Lindholm from the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward Nic Petan, getting defenseman Nathan Beaulieu from the Buffalo Sabres for a sixth-round selection in 2019 and acquiring defenseman Bogdan Kiselevich from the Florida Panthers for a seventh-round selection in 2019.

In the Jets' final move of the day, they acquired forward Alex Broadhurst from the Columbus Blue Jackets for future considerations, according to TSN. Broadhurst, who has played exclusively in the minors this season, did see two games of NHL action with the Blue Jackets last year. He will report to Manitoba in the AHL. Winnipeg was willing to sweeten the Hayes move if the team finishes off a championship season. If the Jets win the Stanley Cup this season, the Rangers also would receive a fourth-round pick in 2022.

Hayes, 26, has 14 goals and 28 assists in 51 games this season. Hayes signed a one-year, $5.175 million deal with New York last offseason. TSN reported that the Jets will take on his entire salary.

The 6-foot-5, 216-pound winger has played his entire career with the Rangers. He has scored at least 40 points in four of his five seasons, totaling 87 goals and 129 assists in 361 games. The Rangers said goodbye to Hayes on Twitter.

"You came to us a kid from Dorchester (Mass.) and became not only a true blue Ranger but a true New Yorker," the team tweeted. "A loyal teammate and even better person who embraced our city and our fans. We thank you!" Lemieux, 22, the son of NHL legend Claude Lemieux, has nine goals and two assists in 44 games this season.

The Rangers now have five picks in the first two rounds of the 2019 draft. Lindholm, 27, has one goal and 11 assists in 61 games for the Maple Leafs this season. The 23-year-old Petan has two assists in 13 games for the Jets this season.

Hendricks, 37, who played for the Jets last season, had two assists in 22 games with the Wild this season. He had five goals and eight assists with Winnipeg last year and 54 goals with 61 assists in 603 career games. Beaulieu, 26, has three goals and four assists for the Sabres and seven goals and 53 assists in seven seasons. Kiselevich, 29, has eighth assists in 32 games with the Panthers in his first NHL season.
