Blue Jackets acquire D McQuaid from Rangers

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired veteran defenseman Adam McQuaid from the New York Rangers for two 2019 draft picks along with AHL defenseman Julius Bergman on Monday. The Rangers received fourth- and seventh-round selections. The trade is just the latest indication of how the Blue Jackets are going for broke this season as it leaves Columbus with just two picks left in the 2019 draft: their own third-rounder and Calgary's seventh-rounder.

McQuaid, 32, had two goals and three assists and averaged 17:28 of ice time in 36 games of his first season with the Rangers. The 6-foot-4 former second-round draft pick in 2005 spent his first nine NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins, winning the Stanley Cup in 2011.

Boston traded McQuaid to New York last September for defenseman Steven Kampfer and two 2019 draft picks. McQuaid brings 498 games of NHL regular-season experience to the Blue Jackets, having scored 71 career points (15 goals, 56 assists). He has also played in 68 postseason games, including a second trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2013.

Bergman, 23, is a Swedish native who was originally drafted by San Jose in the second round (No. 46 pick overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft. This season with the Belleville Senators Bergman had no goals and six assists in 33 games. --Field Level Media
