Red Wings' Green rested over liver virus

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green will miss the remainder of the season because of a virus that is affecting his liver, the team announced Thursday. The issue, which is not believed to be serious, also cost Green the first nine games of the season. He returned to score five goals with 21 assists in 43 games in between bouts with the issue.

"The doctor has suggested several weeks of complete rest to deal with it, so he'll be out for the season," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said, according to nhl.com. "From what we understand, the complete rest should take care of it. This shouldn't be something that keeps coming back." Green, 33, was the 29th overall selection in the 2004 draft by the Washington Capitals. He has 147 goals and 343 assists in 830 career games over 14 seasons with both the Capitals and Red Wings.

In addition to Green, Detroit announced that centre Dylan Larkin will not play at home Thursday against the New York Rangers because of a back injury. He will be re-evaluated Friday.
