Hinton from Shaw University seeks to enter NBA Draft

Amir Hinton, a junior from Division II Shaw University, told ESPN he plans to enter the 2019 NBA Draft and hire an agent. Hinton led Division II in scoring in 2018-19 with 29.4 points per game. The CIAA Player of the Year is shooting to be the first DII player drafted since 2005 when Robert Whaley of Walsh University was selected in the second round. Whaley played 23 NBA games with the Utah Jazz in the 2005-06 season.

"Some scouts have told me I am a top-three guard in this class," Hinton told ESPN. Hinton's coach at Shaw, Joel Hopkins, said Hinton has drawn comparisons from NBA scouts to Tracy McGrady.

"He's somewhere right there with McGrady," Hopkins says of Hinton. "Of course, he's not a 6-8 point guard like Tracy. But he's a 6-5 point guard who is somewhere between John Wall and Ray Allen." Hinton said his short-term goal is to be invited to the NBA draft combine in Chicago in May.
