Hundreds of Algerians took to the streets of the capital on Friday to demand President Abdelaziz Bouteflika quit immediately, as mass protests against the veteran leader entered the fourth week. Protesters gathered in the city centre defying rain, carrying Algerian flags and pamphlets. "Rain will not stop us from continuing our pressure," said 23-year old Ahmed Khoudja.

Earlier this week, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will hand over power to a democratically elected successor after a new constitution is approved and a national conference is held. He postponed an election originally set for April and announced that experts would oversee a transition to a "new system" in coming months. Protesters say this is not enough.
