Ovechkin's punch sidelines Hurricanes' Svechnikov

Carolina Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov exited Monday night's Game 3 against the Washington Capitals after he was dropped by a punch from Alex Ovechkin in Raleigh, N.C. Svechnikov, who appeared to be knocked out, hit the back of his head on the ice after getting punched in the skirmish. The Hurricanes subsequently announced that he was out for the rest of the night due to an upper-body injury.

The first-period fight came shortly after Carolina scored for a 1-0 lead, marking the first time it has been on top in the series. The fighting majors were the first penalties called in the game, coming 10:59 into the contest. Washington entered the game with a 2-0 series lead. Svechnikov scored the two Carolina goals in Game 1.

The Hurricanes also announced after the first period that forward Micheal Ferland would be sidelined for the remainder of the contest because of an upper-body injury. --Field Level Media
