Thai protesters challenge monarchy with symbolic plaque

Thai protesters installed a plaque in the field opposite the Grand Palace in Bangkok early on Sunday inscribed with the message that Thailand belongs to the people and not to the monarch. It was the latest challenge to the monarchy of King Maha Vajiralongkorn after tens of thousands of people joined the biggest protest in years on Saturday and cheered calls for reforms to curb his powers - long a taboo subject.

Placed in the field known as Sanam Luang - Royal Field - the plaque reads "At this place the people have expressed their will: that this country belongs to the people and is not the property of the monarch as they have deceived us." The Royal Palace was not immediate available for comment and nor were spokespeople for the government or the police.
