Nine sewage treatment plants of 30 MGL (megaliters) each will be established in six rivers and canals flowing through Uttarakhand's Udham Singh Nagar district under the Swachh Ganga Mission, state Water Resources Minister Bishan singh Chuphal said on Monday.

''The Union water resources ministry has sanctioned a sum of Rs 199.66 crore for the purpose. The treatment plants will be established under the Swachh Ganga Mission being run by the ministry,'' he said. The rivers and canals in which the treatment plants are to be established include Mela, Dhela, Kitccha, Nandhor, Pilkha and Koshi, the minister said.

Chuphal had met Union Water Resources Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat last month to request for setting up sewage treatment plants in these rivers and canals on the plea that the Ganga could not be 100 per cent clean without cleaning them as all of them merge with the mighty river at one point or the other.
