Two US warships nears Taiwanese port amid tensions with China

Two U.S. warships passed through the Taiwan Strait on Monday, officials said, in a voyage that will likely be viewed in the self-ruled island as a sign of support by President Donald Trump amid heightened tension with China.

"The ships' transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The U.S. Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows," Commander Nate Christensen, deputy spokesman for U.S. Pacific Fleet, said in a statement.
