Three men arrested in a robbery case snatched the revolver of a policeman and shot him in the thigh while being taken to Rajasthan from Madhya Pradesh before staging an escape, an official said on Thursday.

The injured cop, sub-inspector Nanuram Gehlot of Sadar police station of Nimbahera in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh district, is being treated in a hospital in Udaipur.

According to Manoj Kumar Singh, deputy inspector general of police of Ratlam Range, three accused in a robbery case – Lakhan Bavri, Narendra Bavri and Dipak Bavri – were arrested by the Rajasthan police from MP's Mandsaur district on Wednesday. The Rajasthan police team then proceeded with the trio towards their home state in their jeep.

When the vehicle was passing through the jurisdiction of the Neemuch City police station, near the Rajasthan border, the trio overpowered Gehlot, snatched his service revolver and fired one round into his thigh before escaping in the darkness, said Singh. The official said that teams have been formed to re-arrest the three and a reward of Rs 30,000 each has been announced for anyone who provides information leading to their capture.
