Two persons have been arrested here for allegedly posing as CBI officers and demanding Rs one crore from a couple who run a financial firm, a senior police official said Tuesday. Ashwini Sharma and Saji Warekar, the accused, had approached the couple claiming that their firm had committed a fraud.

To cover it up, they allegedly demanded Rs one crore, the police official said. If the couple did not pay up, the accused allegedly threatened to take them to court or kill them in a fake encounter, the official said.

Scared, the couple allegedly paid them Rs 50 lakh and also handed over to them an SUV worth Rs 27 lakh, the police official said. But when the accused demanded another SUV, the couple met deputy commissioner of police (zone 6) S P Nishandar Monday and filed a complaint. A case was registered at MHB Colony Police Station in Borivali, the official said.

The police then laid a trap and nabbed the accused when they came to collect the SUV from the couple's residence in Charkop area of suburban Kandivali, the police official said. Sharma and Warekar were booked under IPC section 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt). Sharma has five similar cases registered against him while Warekar has one such case against his name, police said.
