Two men were arrested for allegedly stealing valuables from the parked cars of visitors outside Tihar jail, police said on Wednesday.
The accused were identified as Prakash (39) and Mohammad Sohai (35), they said.
''Team of Hari Nagar police station observed a pattern of thefts of mobile phones and other valuables from the vehicles parked near Tihar Jail. An operation in plain clothes at the specified location was carried out,'' Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Vichitra Veer said.
During the operation, the staff apprehended Prakash red-handed when he was stealing mobile phones and other valuables from the parked car, the DCP said. The police found that Prakash is a habitual offender and was previously involved in 43 cases. He had stolen mobile phones from Tihar's Gate No 4. He then sold them to Mohammad Sohail, a mobile mechanic who used to sell the spare parts, DCP said. ''Another raid was conducted and Sohail was arrested,'' he said. The police have recovered 11 mobile phones, one wristwatch, two computer tablets, a purse, belts, Rs 2,000, and some other documents. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, he added.
