Thai PM Faces Court Challenge Over Controversial Ministerial Appointment

Thailand's Constitutional Court has accepted a complaint to remove Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for appointing a former lawyer with a criminal conviction. Although Srettha remains in office, the controversy surrounds last month's appointment of Pichit Chuenban, who has since resigned to shield Srettha from legal issues.

Thailand's Constitutional Court on Thursday accepted a complaint seeking to remove Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office for giving a ministerial position to a former lawyer with a criminal conviction.

Srettha was not suspended from duty pending a verdict in the case, as had been sought by a group of senators filing the complaint.

The senators had argued last month's cabinet appointment of Pichit Chuenban was a violation of the constitution. Pichit resigned on Tuesday in an effort to insulate Srettha from the court case.
