New Zealand's commitment to promoting peace and stability in the Middle East and Africa has been reaffirmed with the approval of two-year extensions for four Defence Force deployments, announced by Defence Minister Judith Collins and Foreign Minister Winston Peters.

“These deployments reflect our enduring dedication to upholding peace and stability, and our active participation in maintaining the international rules-based system,” stated Ms. Collins.

The extensions cover New Zealand's peacekeeping missions until September 2026, including contributions to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, the Multinational Force and Observers in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation in the Middle East.

“Security challenges in these regions can have broad implications, impacting New Zealand's security and prosperity. Hence, our continued peacekeeping efforts play a crucial role in maintaining stability and promoting peace,” highlighted Mr. Peters.

Furthermore, New Zealand's commitment to Middle East maritime security, including the Combined Maritime Forces in Bahrain, will be extended until June 2026.

“Securing freedom of navigation and ensuring the safety of sea trading routes are paramount to New Zealand's interests. Disruptions in this region can swiftly affect our trade, underscoring the significance of our involvement,” emphasized Ms. Collins.

In early 2025, New Zealand will assume a six-month rotation commanding the Combined Task Force 150 of the Combined Maritime Force, responsible for coordinating multinational efforts against smuggling, piracy, and terrorism in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden. This will be supported by the deployment of an Anzac-class frigate for a two-month period.

Additionally, a mine countermeasure task unit will collaborate with partners under the United States Naval Forces Central Command for six months between May 2025 and June 2026, focusing on promoting open sea lines of communication.

“These deployments serve as invaluable opportunities for the New Zealand Defence Force to enhance and test vital skills and capabilities crucial for safeguarding New Zealand's interests,” concluded Ms. Collins.
