United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin told a gathering of top security officials on Saturday that war with China was neither imminent nor unavoidable, despite rapidly escalating tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. He emphasized the importance of renewed dialogue between him and his Chinese counterpart to avoid “miscalculations and misunderstandings.”
Austin's remarks at the Shangri-La defense forum in Singapore followed his more than hour-long meeting with Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun. This marked the first in-person meeting between top defense officials since communications between the American and Chinese militaries broke down in 2022 after then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, which infuriated Beijing.
While they did not change their longstanding positions on Taiwan and China's expansive claims in the South China Sea, Austin highlighted the significance of reopening communication channels. He said, “As long as we're talking, we're able to identify those issues that are troublesome and place guardrails to ensure there are no misperceptions and miscalculations that can spiral out of control.”
