In a landmark ruling, a Nagpur court sentenced Sanjay Puri to death for the appalling rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl in 2019. The verdict came from District Judge and Additional Sessions Judge S R Padwal under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The tragic incident unfolded in December 2019, when the child's body was discovered with severe head injuries in Linga village, Kalmeshwar tehsil. A piece of cloth and rod were found stuffed in her mouth, and a blood-stained boulder lay nearby, painting a grim picture of the horrors she endured.
The investigation revealed that the child was raped and bludgeoned to death by Puri, who worked as a watchman on the farm. Special Public Prosecutor Prashant Kumar Sathianathan confirmed that 26 witnesses were examined during the trial. Apart from the death sentence, Puri received life imprisonment under section 376(2) of the IPC and seven years in jail under Section 10 of the POCSO Act. All the sentences will run concurrently.
