Law enforcement agencies must take stringent actions against unscrupulous elements to ensure the peace in Jammu and Kashmir remains undisturbed, said Director General of Police RR Swain on Saturday.

Swain stressed that a peaceful environment is essential for elections, allowing people to vote without fear. 'To maintain peace, we sometimes face criticism, but it is necessary,' he remarked during a public darbar in Pulwama district.

The police chief stated, 'Our objective is to sustain a peaceful atmosphere. We must be tough against some individuals to ensure the safety of the masses. Recent Lok Sabha elections were held peacefully with high voter turnout, marking a positive onset for change.'

Addressing the issue of terrorism, Swain noted a drop in local terrorist numbers but pointed out the presence of 70 to 80 foreign terrorists in the Union Territory. 'Our efforts with the community have significantly reduced local terrorism. However, foreign terrorists continue to infiltrate, bringing weapons and creating instability. We are acting decisively against them and their local supporters to safeguard the public.'
