Jharkhand minister Alamgir Alam, currently imprisoned due to a money laundering case, has officially resigned from his posts in the state cabinet and as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP). The resignation, communicated through letters to Chief Minister Champai Soren and AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, marks a significant development in the political landscape of Jharkhand.
In his letter from Birsa Munda Central Jail, Ranchi, Alam expressed his gratitude towards the party leadership for the opportunity to serve as CLP leader. His detention by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) earlier this month followed the seizure of approximately Rs 32 crore cash from premises linked to his aide.
The opposition BJP had intensified pressure on Alam to step down, accusing the JMM-led alliance of corruption. The BJP highlighted that Alam's conduct of fixing tenders in exchange for favors had crossed all limits of political decency. The resignation only materialized after the BJP threatened mass protests. The ED continues to investigate the case, involving senior bureaucrats and politicians.
