Distillery Sealed in MP over Child Labour Scandal

A distillery in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district has been sealed and its license temporarily suspended after 58 children were found working there. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights uncovered the illegal use of child labour during a raid. Strict action is promised against those responsible.

A distillery linked to the Som Group in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district faces severe repercussions after authorities sealed the facility and suspended its manufacturing license. The crackdown follows the shocking discovery of 58 children, including girls, employed in violation of child labour laws.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) unearthed the illicit activity during a recent raid. State Excise Department acted swiftly, sealing the plant located in Sehatganj, about 30km from the district headquarters, and issuing a 20-day suspension of its license, confirmed Assistant Excise Officer Sudeep Tomar.

“We served a three-day returnable show cause notice to Som Distilleries following a raid at their plant on June 15,” said Tomar. The state excise commissioner took action after the company failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, further indicating severe measures will follow this disturbing incident.
