The BJP announced on Monday the launch of a nationwide program aimed at 'exposing' what it labels as Congress' 'authoritarianism' during the 1975 Emergency. The initiative will be anchored by BJP president JP Nadda, who is scheduled to speak at the main event titled 'Dark Days of Democracy' on Tuesday at the party's headquarters.
According to BJP's chief spokesperson Anil Baluni, the Emergency period stands as a stark 'dark chapter' in India's democratic history. Imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, the Emergency led to the suspension of civil rights, mass arrests of opposition leaders, and strict media censorship over a span of 21 months.
Baluni emphasized that the program aims to highlight how Congress allegedly undermined the Constitution and democratic freedoms during this period. The BJP’s initiative will involve participation from leaders, officebearers, and karyakartas across the country in various protests and events. The party also aims to educate the public about the Constitutional provisions like Article 352, under which the Emergency was proclaimed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in ahead of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, labeling the Emergency as a 'black spot' on Indian democracy. Modi's remarks served as a prelude to the BJP's broader narrative, drawing a stark contrast between the current administration’s goals and the historical actions of Congress.
This renewed focus on the Emergency comes amidst mounting criticism of the BJP government by opposition parties, with leaders urging attention to contemporary issues.
