Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday refuted claims of a terror attack on a security post in Udhampur district, asserting the shots fired were a precautionary measure due to suspicious movement.

According to officials, a sentry on duty fired several rounds into the air around 8 PM, followed by a thorough search of the area, which yielded no findings.

“A sentry opened fire as a cautionary step upon noticing suspicious activity in the Sang area of Basantgarh. Reports circulating on social media about an attack are unfounded,” stated police in an official release.

The police also urged the public to refrain from spreading “unsubstantiated information”.

The security forces remain engaged in a significant search and combing operation in Basantgarh, the area linking Udhampur with Kathua district, where a recent ambush on an army patrol resulted in five soldiers dead and several injured.
