Former Indonesian Agriculture Minister Sentenced to 10 Years for Corruption
Syahrul Yasin Limpo, the former Indonesian Agriculture Minister, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption. Involving private jet travel and jewelry for his wife, Limpo allegedly extorted over 44 billion rupiah from ministry officials. He was also fined and ordered to pay compensation.
In a significant ruling on Thursday, an Indonesian court sentenced former Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo to 10 years in prison for corruption. The charges centered around misuse of funds for private jet travel and extravagant jewelry for his wife.
According to prosecutors, Limpo extorted more than 44 billion rupiah ($2.72 million) from officials at the Ministry of Agriculture to cover his personal expenses. Chief Judge Rianto Adam Pontoh, as broadcast on KompasTV, also fined Limpo 300 million rupiah and mandated him to pay approximately 14.6 billion rupiah in compensation.
Post-verdict, television footage captured Limpo speaking to reporters. Despite denying any wrongdoing, he expressed respect for the court's decision, labeling the verdict as a "consequence of my work." Limpo's attorney, Djamaludin Koedoeboen, did not immediately comment when contacted by Reuters.
Two additional defendants, former senior officials at the Agriculture Ministry, received four-year prison terms. Limpo becomes the sixth minister in President Joko Widodo's administration to face corruption charges. Earlier this year, a former communications minister was sentenced to 15 years, while the social affairs and fisheries ministers were imprisoned in 2021.
