Historic Oaths: Indian-Origin MPs Swear in with Diversity

Newly elected Indian-origin MPs in the UK House of Commons have been pledging their allegiance using diverse holy texts and affirmations. Notable figures like Rishi Sunak and first-time MPs have taken their oaths on sacred texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and Sikh scriptures, reflecting their cultural and religious backgrounds.

Newly elected Indian-origin MPs to the House of Commons have been pledging their allegiance to the British Crown using a diverse array of holy texts and affirmations, symbolizing their loyalty to the country. Over the past week, MPs have chosen to swear on religious texts or affirm their oath as the new Parliament commenced.

An auspicious copy of the ‘Bhagavad Gita,’ presented to Speaker Lindsay Hoyle by former MP Shailesh Vara, featured during Rishi Sunak’s oath as Leader of the Opposition. First-time MP Kanishka Narayan also chose the 'Gita' for his oath, as did other new MPs such as Shivani Raja. Veteran Tory MP Bob Blackman took his oath holding both the 'Gita' and the 'King James Bible.'

Other MPs, such as British Sikh Tan Dhesi and Sojan Joseph, representing Labour, opted for scriptures from their respective faiths. Additionally, many MPs chose a non-religious affirmation, reflecting the varied cultural and religious backgrounds in the UK Parliament. The process concluded Thursday, with all MPs, including 29 of Indian heritage, completing the protocol before the State Opening and the King's Speech on July 17.
