Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging swift action for the release of 13 fishermen from the state who were arrested by Sri Lankan authorities. Stalin highlighted the crisis facing the fishermen and the seizure of their three boats.

The arrest occurred on July 11, 2024, with Sri Lankan authorities detaining a total of 173 fishing boats and 80 fishermen, severely impacting their livelihoods and causing immense distress to their families, according to Stalin.

Stalin called for a strong and coordinated effort by the Ministry of External Affairs to address the issue urgently and to activate diplomatic channels to ensure the immediate release of the fishermen and their boats.
