The U.N. spokesperson explained the talks are designed to explore methods for implementing humanitarian measures and civilian protection, as requested by the Security Council. These discussions were initiated by U.N. Envoy for Sudan Ramtane Lamamra.

She added the talks are 'proximity talks,' meaning the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces will negotiate through mediators instead of direct face-to-face meetings.
