Gujarat Government Drafts New Boating Regulations After Vadodara Tragedy

The Gujarat government presented draft regulations for boating activities to the High Court to prevent incidents like the January 18 boat capsize in Vadodara, which claimed 14 lives. The Gujarat government on Friday informed the High Court about its draft rules aimed at regulating boating activities to prevent repeat tragedies like the January 18 boat capsize in Vadodara.

The incident resulted in the death of twelve students and two teachers when their boat overturned in Motnath lake, Harni area of Vadodara city.

The rules, set under the Inland Vessels Act of 2021, cover registration, fitness certifications, and mandatory safety equipment. A 'district waterside safety committee' will be established for enforcement, led by a magistrate or police commissioner. Penalties will be imposed for non-compliance.
