Railway's Response to Tragic Canal Incident in Kerala

After the Kerala government blamed Southern Railway for non-cooperation in cleaning a canal where a sanitation worker drowned, the railway responded by insisting that garbage prevention measures should be taken by government agencies. Southern Railway expressed condolences and clarified their waste management practices, proposing additional measures to mitigate waste dumping into the canal.

Hours after the Kerala government criticized Southern Railway for its non-cooperation in cleaning the Aamayizhanjaan canal, where a sanitation worker recently drowned, the railway on Monday said government agencies should take preventive measures to stop garbage from entering the underground channel within railway premises.

The Southern Railway extended its deepest condolences to the family of Joy, the sanitation worker who lost his life while employed by a contractor engaged in canal cleaning at the Thiruvananthapuram central station premises.

In a statement, the Thiruvananthapuram Division of Southern Railway stated that waste generated during passenger handling is properly cleared from the station, emphasizing that the railway does not dump waste into the canal. Bio-toilets in railway coaches, which prevent open discharge of waste, were also highlighted.
