A Congress delegation met Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar on Tuesday, urging action on the surge in custodial deaths across the state. The delegation, led by Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai, presented a memorandum highlighting the gravity of these incidents.
According to Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi, the memorandum underscored the alarming statistics presented in the Lok Sabha – six custodial deaths per day nationally, with UP leading the figures. In 2021-22, 501 custodial deaths were recorded in Uttar Pradesh alone, a stark indicator of the prevailing anarchy in the state, as per the Congress.
The delegation also called for strict action against the policemen involved in these custodial deaths, deeming the charges very serious. Additionally, they drew attention to crimes such as women atrocities, loot, murder, and mob lynching in Aligarh, urging the DGP to take stringent measures.
