Baltic States Ban Belarus-Registered Cars Amid Sanctions

Estonia and Lithuania have announced that Belarus-registered cars will no longer be allowed entry through their borders with either Russia or Belarus, citing EU sanctions against Belarus. Latvia had implemented a similar ban earlier this week. Diplomatic vehicles are exempt from this ban.

In a significant move against Belarus, Estonia and Lithuania announced Wednesday that Belarus-registered cars will no longer be permitted entry through checkpoints on their borders with Russia or Belarus, citing European Union sanctions.

Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that the ban comes in response to Belarus's support for Russia's aggression in Ukraine. The ban will not affect diplomatic vehicles.

The measures follow a similar ban enacted by Latvia and mirror last year's prohibitions on Russian-registered cars by six countries, including Poland, Finland, and Norway.
