Ex-Illinois Deputy Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal Shooting of Black Woman

Former Illinois sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson has pleaded not guilty to murder charges, one day after being fired and arrested for the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman. According to court documents, Grayson shot Massey in the face as she ducked for cover during a call for help at her home.

Prominent civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, representing Massey's family, called for accountability and transparency. A grand jury indicted Grayson on multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder. He is currently in jail, awaiting his next court date on August 26. Grayson's lawyer did not provide immediate comment.

Massey had called the police regarding a suspected intruder when the incident occurred. Grayson reportedly issued instructions to Massey before drawing his firearm and shooting her. The Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting, and body-camera footage is slated for public release. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker condemned the killing, stating Massey deserved protection, not harm.
