UN Court Declares Israel's Presence in Palestinian Territories 'Unlawful'
The International Court of Justice has declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories as 'unlawful' and urged it to end immediately. The court highlighted the illegality of Israel's settlements, resource usage, and its overall presence in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, intensifying international scrutiny on Israel.
On Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared Israel’s presence in the Palestinian occupied territories as “unlawful” and demanded its immediate termination. The court’s non-binding opinion highlighted Israel’s policies of annexing territory, imposing permanent control, and building settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
ICJ President Nawaf Salam announced that the transfer of Israeli settlers to these regions violates the Fourth Geneva Convention. The court expressed serious concerns over expanding settlements and found Israel’s usage of natural resources incompatible with international law.
The ruling comes amid rising tensions, including a 10-month military assault on Gaza. Israel, disputing the claims, did not send a legal team but submitted written statements defending its actions as protective measures for its citizens, critiquing the court’s prejudice. The broader implications of the ruling may further isolate Israel on the international stage.
