Supreme Court Stays Controversial Kanwar Yatra Directive

The Supreme Court has issued an interim stay on directives passed by the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments, which mandated that eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route must display the names of their owners. Opponents, including Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, had challenged the directive as unconstitutional.

In a statement to the press, Moitra hailed the court's action as a victory for all Indians, calling the directive an instance of religious discrimination. 'This is a great victory for the Constitution and for all people of India,' Moitra said.

Leaders across the political spectrum, including Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, criticized the directive, linking it to communal politics. The Supreme Court has also sought responses from the governments involved.
