Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urged the Centre to take swift action for the release of nine fishermen and their two boats detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. Stalin communicated this appeal to the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, and emphasized the urgency of addressing this ongoing issue.
In his letter, Stalin called for immediate measures to secure the release of 87 fishermen and 175 boats currently held by Sri Lankan authorities. The recent detention on July 22, 2024, saw fishermen from Rameswaram taken into custody, further raising alarm.
Stalin pointed out that 250 fishermen have been arrested this year alone, marking the highest number since 2014. He urged the government to take earnest diplomatic steps to alleviate the distress of the fishing community and ensure the rapid release of those detained.
