President Ruto Nominates Douglas Kanja for Inspector General of Police

Kenya's President William Ruto has officially nominated Douglas Kanja for the role of inspector general of police, as confirmed by a statement from Ruto's office on Thursday.

Kanja has been serving as the acting inspector general since mid-July after his predecessor, Japhet Koome, stepped down amid mounting scrutiny and criticism of police actions during anti-government protests. These demonstrations, initially peaceful, turned violent and resulted in at least 39 fatalities.

The protests were in response to proposed tax increases, and the subsequent police conduct has drawn significant public and political attention.
