India has criticized Canada for not taking equivalent action against pro-Khalistan elements who have threatened Indian leaders and diplomats, days after Canadian authorities acted against two men for making online threats against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal rebuked Canada's double standards at a weekly media briefing, stating, 'When a democracy adopts different yardsticks to measure or implement the rule of law and freedom of expression, it only exposes its own double standard.' He added that India has been urging Canada to act against anti-India elements operating from its soil.
Jaiswal highlighted the repeated threats by pro-Khalistani elements displaying violent slogans against Indian leaders and diplomats in Canada, and called for strong and swift action from Canadian authorities. He also condemned the recent vandalisation of a temple in Edmonton, citing it as a recurring and emboldened offense. India's ties with Canada have been strained since Prime Minister Trudeau's allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which New Delhi rejected as ‘absurd’.
