''What is Delhi Police doing? Have they lost it?'' questioned the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, castigating the police for a ''strange'' probe that led to the arrest of an SUV driver for his alleged role in the drowning of three civil service aspirants at a coaching center.
Despite the High Court's harsh words, the jailed SUV driver did not find respite as his bail plea was dismissed by a magisterial court later that day. Judicial Magistrate Vinod Kumar rejected the bail plea of five accused, including the SUV driver, described by police as a ''masti-khor'' or fun lover.
A bench including Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela criticized the police for focusing on a bystander while ignoring the role of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials. ''We are telling you, once the responsibility is fixed on officials, no such incidents will occur in the future,'' the bench stated.
The court was hearing a plea from Kutumb, an organization seeking a high-level committee to investigate the deaths that occurred on July 27. The High Court has hinted at involving a central agency for a more thorough probe and directed MCD officials to appear before it.
