In a significant development, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy praised the Supreme Court's decision to allow states to make sub-classifications within Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) to promote quotas for the most marginalized sub-groups.
Reddy informed the Assembly that Telangana had forcefully supported this move in the Apex Court. 'I sincerely thank the constitution bench of the Supreme Court of India. Six out of seven judges affirmed that state governments have the authority for sub-classification,' he said.
The Chief Minister further announced that Telangana would be the first state to implement this sub-classification policy and would introduce an ordinance to apply this in ongoing job notifications if necessary. A seven-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud ruled 6:1 in favor of this provision.
