Judicial Commission Clears Police in Atiq Ahmed's Custody Death

A judicial commission has ruled out pre-planned conspiracy or police negligence in the murder of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in police custody. The report was tabled in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly and suggested that media coverage of such incidents should be regulated to avoid compromising investigations.

The commission's report was presented in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on the last day of the monsoon session on Thursday.

Headed by retired Allahabad High Court Judge Arvind Kumar Tripathi, the commission concluded that the deaths of Ahmed and Ashraf on April 15, 2023, were not the result of a planned conspiracy by state police. The commission also suggested media should exercise caution while covering such events to avoid compromising investigations.
