A court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced Sanjeet Dash to death for killing his wife and attempting to murder his six-year-old daughter in a June 2022 incident that shocked the local community.
Dash, aged 46, fatally stabbed his wife, Saraswati, a head nurse, 33 times and then slit the throat of his first daughter, who survived the attack. The crime occurred shortly after the birth of the couple's second daughter.
Judge Bandana Kar declared the crime the 'rarest of rare' and imposed the death penalty, emphasizing its deterrent effect on similar heinous acts. The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority (DSLA) to consider compensation for the minor daughters of the deceased.
