Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Friday called the landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district a 'terrible tragedy.' He stated that the magnitude of the disaster is unprecedented in a single area in the state and should be addressed differently.
The Congress MP announced plans to raise the issue at the national level and with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, highlighting the need for a distinct approach. The current focus is on recovering bodies, finding potential survivors, and ensuring the well-being of displaced individuals. He stressed the importance of rehabilitating survivors in safe areas, as many expressed reluctance to return to landslide-hit zones.
In a meeting with district officials and Congress leaders, Gandhi informed reporters about the intention to build more than 100 houses in Wayanad for affected families. Briefings from district administration detailed death tolls, property damage, and ongoing rescue operations. Gandhi, joined by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other senior Congress figures, labeled the landslide situation as a 'national disaster' requiring an urgent comprehensive action plan.
