Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has issued a warning regarding the state's law and order, suggesting a potential review if 'armed and non-armed' groups persist in extorting illegal taxes from transporters, petrol pumps, and business houses.
Singh noted that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) was previously imposed by the Centre due to a surge in such activities, indicating a similar situation might force the government's hand once again. The AFSPA, previously enforced across Manipur except for Imphal municipality, saw some relaxation in April 2022.
Addressing the assembly, Singh urged truck drivers not to halt their services on national highways despite the extortion, promising enhanced security. He also revealed that 11,892 cases of ethnic violence have been registered since May 2023, which resulted in 226 deaths and displaced over 59,000 individuals.
