The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday urged that any proposals to amend the Wakf Act should be discussed in a 'dispassionate atmosphere' to reach accurate conclusions. The VHP advocated for a 'secular law' to govern all religious properties, including those of Muslims.

According to sources, the government is preparing to introduce a bill in Parliament to amend the 1995 law governing Waqf boards. The amendments aim to ensure greater accountability and transparency and mandate the inclusion of women in these bodies.

'The Government of India proposes to move a bill for amendment to the Waqf Act. I believe that the proposed amendments should be debated in a dispassionate atmosphere for reaching the right conclusions,' said VHP national president Alok Kumar.

Emphasizing the importance of religious charities of various communities, Kumar questioned the need for a separate law exclusively for the Muslim community. He stated, 'Probably, the time is right to consider whether we should have a secular law governing all religious properties in the country including that of Muslims.'

Kumar also supported some proposed amendments, such as the inclusion of women in the Waqf Board and Council, stating, 'Women should have the right to be consulted, to participate in discussions, and be a part of the decision-making process.'

Highlighting concerns about misuse, Kumar noted that Waqf properties, dedicated to Allah, are often exploited for commercial and residential purposes by unscrupulous individuals. He stressed the need for transparent recording and auditing of all Waqf income and expenses.
