The Kerala government announced on Monday that the tribal families affected by the devastating July 30 landslides in Wayanad are safe and staying in relief camps organized by the SC/ST department.
As of now, 47 members of the tribal community, including children, have been accommodated in various state-run relief camps. All tribal families in the area survived the landslides that impacted Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions of Wayanad, according to officials.
“The four families from Erattukund hamlet will be rehabilitated. Although officials attempted to relocate them to camps near Meppadi, they chose to remain at the Attamala camp within the forest,” stated a government release.
The release also mentioned that food, clothing, and medicines will be provided at the camp. The six-member family rescued from deep inside the forest near Soochipara waterfalls is also staying at the Attamala camp.
“Measures are being taken to provide the necessary government documents, including ID cards and other essentials, for the children,” the release added. The six-member family, which includes four toddlers aged one to four years, was rescued by a four-member forest team after a treacherous ten-hour trek.
