Mali Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Ukraine Amid Accusations of Insurgency Support
Mali has severed diplomatic relations with Ukraine, claiming that Kyiv supported an attack by armed groups resulting in significant losses for Malian soldiers and Russian mercenaries. This follows comments by a Ukrainian military intelligence spokesperson and further allegations by Senegal. The incident exacerbates tensions between the West and Sahel region nations.
Mali's government has officially severed diplomatic ties with Ukraine, citing accusations that Kyiv aided a recent armed attack resulting in heavy casualties for Malian soldiers and Russian mercenaries. The announcement was made by Mali's government spokesman, Col. Abdoulaye Maiga, following remarks from a Ukrainian official suggesting Ukraine's involvement in the July attack.
The clash in northern Mali saw the deaths of numerous Wagner mercenaries and Malian troops, marking a significant blow to the Russian paramilitary group. Ukraine, however, has denied any involvement, criticizing Mali for making decisions without thorough investigation or evidence.
This diplomatic rift comes amid deteriorating relations between the West and Sahel region countries, with military-led governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger expelling Western forces and aligning with Russian mercenaries for security support. Additionally, Senegal has echoed Mali's accusations, bringing further strain to Kyiv's diplomatic standing in the region.
