Russia Alleges Ukrainian Border Assault, Deploys Reserves to Combat Attack
Russia accused Ukraine of attacking its southern border, deploying reserves to counter the offensive. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported ongoing battles, with Ukraine focusing on repelling Russian forces in its territory. The attacks have involved shelling and drone strikes, leading to multiple casualties on both sides.
Russia on Tuesday accused Ukraine of attacking its southern border and confirmed the deployment of reserves to counter hundreds of fighters backed by tanks.
Despite initial claims of repelling the attackers, ongoing battles were confirmed by the Russian defense ministry. Units from the FSB and border troops are actively engaging in the conflict in the Sumy region, with Russian warplanes targeting Ukrainian armored vehicles.
In the midst of frequent shelling and occasional incursions from anti-Kremlin volunteers, Tuesday's assault involved up to 300 fighters using tanks against Russian border units in the Kursk region. Independent verification of battlefield accounts remains unconfirmed.
Acting governor Alexei Smirnov described the border situation as 'difficult,' reporting casualties amongst civilians due to shelling and drone attacks. Meanwhile, Ukrainian efforts focus on reclaiming territories taken by Russia over the past two-and-a-half years.
A Russian missile strike also targeted the city of Kharkiv, damaging a medical clinic and injuring five people.
